The AeU Gallery has on display exotic original batik works by a well known Malaysian Batik Artist Masrina Abdullah. Malaysian batik has its own distinct identity with bold colours and motifs. According to Masrina, batik art is traditional, if we want to create batik art, we cannot change its identity. Masrina’s use of vibrant colours and double layer technique creates a 'colour on colour' effect resulting in exciting, contemporary and unique pieces.

Artist
Masrina Abdullah, studied architecture at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, United States between 1983-1988.During this time she spent her summers taking art classes. Upon returning home to Malaysia Masrina worked with several batik producers. In 2003, she emerged winner of the inaugural Piala Seri Endon an annual award that those in the batik world look forward to a key component of the movement towards Malaysia Batik – Crafted For the World. |
She has since then won several honours and awards both at home and in the International scene and has had many exhibitions and batik fashion shows both at home abroad. She collaborated with the Italian designer Roberta di Camerino after taking part at the Milan Fashion Week in 2005. Masrina’s creations were awarded the coveted Unesco-Ahpada (Bangkok) Seal of Excellence for Handicraft Products in 2006.
She is the founder of Ilham Cipta, a company that produces batik designs and fabrics.
Works on Display
The range of batik paintings on display are her series on 'Unseen Call' and the 'Relaxing Tropics'. She uses cotton and silk base. According to Masrina a painting that uses different types of materials will end up differently in quality. Library users can browse and appreciate the pieces on display. The exotic exhibition does not only add colour to the ‘living library’ it becomes a source of inspiration through the eyes and minds of library users. |
